Love comes to Greater Fort Lauderdale when Young At Art Museum celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Summer of Love, a phenomenon of music and cultural expression.
Young At Art marks this occasion by featuring the acclaimed national traveling exhibition XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness, created by Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh with support from The Fetzer Institute. The exhibition encourages families to explore the power of love by sharing stories, creating videos and engaging in a makerspace that fosters the art of making and giving.
Alongside XOXO is Palindrome Park, an immersive installation by artist Francesco Lo Castro. This exhibition allows visitors entry into a geometric, triangular ball pit, where they can play and view 3D artworks and then build their own palindrome sculptures, with shapes and colors inspired by Lo Castro. By the end of their journeys, visitors are taught how to create order and balance, which is an integral component of becoming a compassionate person.
Programs this summer include a Special Guest Artist Series featuring local artists, Amanda Covach (love = communication), The MILAGROS Collective: Joey Fillastre and Felici Asteinza (eye-popping patterns), Lisa Rockford (teddy bear art prints) and Francesco Lo Castro. In addition, there will be workshops inspired by famous artists, including Keith Haring and Andy Warhol. Other summer programs include Art Camps in ceramics, drawing/painting, fashion design, digital art and a new drone camp, plus a Teen Comic Convention in July.
XOXO: A Summer of Love & Art also features events at locations along Fort Lauderdale Beach, including Studio Paint Mixers, Flower Power Pop-Up Mural, Open Air Painting Studio and a Summer of Love celebration filled with art activities, drumming performance, tie-dye fashion show and the creation of the world’s largest human peace sign.
XOXO: A Summer of Love & Art is funded in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, Sunny.org and Funding Arts Broward. Kicking off the Summer of Love & Art will be Tastemakers, an interactive night of art, libations and culinary experiences, honoring Gerry & Ellen Greenspoon. The event, benefiting museum programs for at-risk youth, will be held at Young At Art Museum on Saturday, May 20th, 7:30pm - 11pm.
2017 marks Young At Art’s 28th year serving South Florida and the 5th anniversary in its current facility. Young At Art Museum is located at 751 S.W. 121 Avenue in Davie.
