A love letter in couture: Dolce&Gabbana at ICA Miami

Italy arrives in Miami in the grandest of fashion, literally.

From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce&Gabbana, now on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami is a kaleidoscope of vivid color, opulence and artisanal mastery. Marking its first U.S. stop following celebrated presentations in Milan, Paris and Rome - it unfolds spectacularly elevated design, imagination and refined artistry.

Spanning three floors, the brilliant exhibition gathers more than 300 garments, adornments and jewelry creations that reveal the expertise and devotion behind the iconic Italian fashion house founded by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. This lush presentation traces the evolution from its 1985 ready-to-wear debut to the rarefied realm of couture - where fantasy, heritage and craftsmanship converge in heavenly form.

Curated by Florence Müller with exhibition design by Agence Galuchat and produced by MARI, the show guides visitors through a sequence of immersive galleries - each one a carefully composed stage of elegance, symbolism and theatricality. “Step into the world of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, where magic and fantasy, legend and reality intertwine,” Müller notes.

Visitors first enter through a dreamlike cinematic prologue of floor-to-ceiling digital installations celebrating all things Dolce&Gabbana through video imagery. From there, a procession of rooms inspired by Rome, Sardinia, Sicily, Milan (and much more) reveals a stunning panorama of creative design excellence.

Statuesque mannequins appear like figures from courtly pageantry beneath glittering Murano chandeliers, adorned in majestic gowns, embroidered miters, imperial capes and sculptural drapery. A symphony of intricate textiles before your eyes: satin, silk, jacquard, lace, feathers, leather, yarn, chains, wire and crystal embellishment catching the light with dazzling brilliance.

Every single space takes your breath away.

The palette alone feels like a living painting. A glorious whirlwind of scarlet, silver, emerald, plum, sapphire, amethyst, gold and midnight hues ripple across voluminous skirts and sweeping silhouettes. Every detail reveals intention. Hand-stitched appliqués, luminous stones and handwoven embroidery form surfaces so intricate they resemble jewelry rather than cloth.

Come closer, the craftsmanship is mesmerizing. Jackets embroidered with cherubic figures echo Renaissance paintings. Folk-inspired dresses reference southern Italian traditions with vibrant ornamentation. Regal capes shimmer with metallic thread, while platform shoes sparkle with playful theatricality. Many pieces require months of meticulous handwork - a testament to the house’s unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Throughout the spaces, video installations showcase the designers’ legendary runway spectacles staged at historic landmarks. The visual narrative echoes those settings with immersive scenography (ancient columns, painted tiles, ornate furnishings) transporting visitors across centuries of artistic inspiration.

Moments of wonder appear around every corner. One gallery evokes a luminous chapel crowned by a radiant sacred heart. Another celebrates folklore through vibrant pattern and texture. Toward the finale, a grand operatic room gathers sweeping silhouettes, dramatic trains and jewel-encrusted garments that feel worthy of royalty - as if queens, saints and chic heroines of opera might step into them at any moment.

A recreated atelier offers one of the most intimate moments in the exhibition. Here, sketches, corsetry, unfinished jackets and trays of ornate embellishments reveal the meticulous process behind the spectacle - where Dolce&Gabbana’s vision slowly becomes an extraordinary handmade gem through patience, precision and plenty of passion.

Before leaving, visitors pass through the gift shop, where books, scarves, fragrance and keepsakes extend the experience beyond the curatorial project.

On view through June 14, From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce&Gabbana offers far more than fashion. It is an elevated celebration of beauty, mastery and imagination - a richly layered homage that converges culture and couture in unforgettable form.
