Just in Time for Art Week Miami: The National YoungArts Foundation Debuts New Exhibits

The National YoungArts Foundation identifies and nurtures the most accomplished young artists in the visual, literary, design and performing arts and assists them at critical junctures in their educational and professional development. YoungArts aspires to create a community of alumni that provides a lifetime of encouragement, opportunity and support. Established in 1981 by Lin and Ted Arison, YoungArts’ signature program is an application-based award for emerging artists ages 15–18, or in grades 10–12, from across the United States.

Coinciding with the beginning of Art Week Miami, are three new exhibits that are sure to inspire.

When We Were Young (November 29 – December 4)

On view in the YoungArts Gallery, When We Were Young will feature contemporary masterworks from the early years of the renowned JP Morgan Chase Art Collection, which will be paired with newly created works by YoungArts Visual Arts alumni from across the country. Highlights on view will include Slate (1959) by Joan Mitchell, Homage to the Square: In Late Red (1959) by Josef Albers, 0 through 9 (1960) by Jasper Johns, The Marine Works (1960 – 1962) by Robert Indiana and two untitled works from 1960 by Alma Thomas. Participating alumni work across artistic media, and include video and sculpture artist Amy Reid and painter and performing artist Annie Blazejack (both 2005 YoungArts Winners), as well as sculptor, photographer and video artist Cara Levine and painter Laini Nemett (2002 YoungArts Winners).

Body + Place at PULSE Miami Beach Contemporary Art Fair (December 1-4)

During this year’s Miami Art Week, coinciding with Art Basel Miami Beach, the National YoungArts Foundation will for the first time participate in the fair marketplace at PULSE Miami Contemporary Art Fair (PULSE) in providing a dynamic and international platform for ten YoungArts alumni in visual arts. The group exhibition, Body + Place, will be co-curated by Naomi Fisher (1994 YoungArts Winner in Visual Art) and YoungArts Artistic Programs Director Luisa Munera. Featured artists include Leonardo Bacan (2016 YoungArts Winner), Glenn Espinosa (2015 YoungArts Winner), Marlena Fleck (2016 YoungArts Winner, Nicole Mouriño (2006 YoungArts Winner), Luz Orozco (2015 YoungArts Winner), Eric Rhein (1980 YoungArts Winner), Kathia St.Hilaire (2013 YoungArts Winner), Tamara Walker (2013 YoungArts Winner), Wade Winslow (2016 YoungArts Winner), and Luis Zepeda (2014 YoungArts Winner). Rolls-Royce Art Programme - Roots by José Parlá (November 29 – December 15)

José Parlá’s site-specific installation “Roots,” curated by Laurie Ann Farrell of the Savannah College of Art and Design was commissioned by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars North America as part of the Rolls-Royce Art Programme. The installation of new paintings and sculpture explores the intersections between Parlá’s Cuban and American heritages.
