Vladimir Petrov: Bach–Busoni, Chopin, Rachmaninoff & Liszt — Discovery Series, The Wolfsonian

Born in Russia and raised in Mexico, Vladimir Petrov is one of the leading pianists of his generation. Winner of the Audience Prize and a laureate of the 63rd Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition (2021), he comes to the Discovery Series with a virtuoso program from Bach to Liszt.

First part: Bach–Busoni, Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004 · Scriabin, Prelude for the Left Hand Op. 9 No. 1, Étude Op. 42 No. 5, Waltz Op. 38 · Chopin, Fantasy Op. 49 · Shostakovich, Prelude and Fugue Op. 87 No. 21 in B-flat major.

Second part: Rachmaninoff–Alexandrov, “How Fair This Spot” Op. 21 No. 7 and “They Answered” Op. 21 No. 4 · Rachmaninoff, Variations on a Theme of Corelli Op. 42 · Debussy, L'isle joyeuse · Liszt, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12.

The artist

Petrov has won first prizes at the Lotar Shevchenko, Ciudad de Vigo and José Jacinto Cuevas competitions, and has played Carnegie Hall, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and the Mariinsky Theatre. A top graduate of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, he studied with Elisso Virsaladze and is now based in New York.
