SMDCAC PRESENTS INDIE FLICKS: CODE OF THE FREAKS
February 21st through the 24th
Code of the Freaks presents a radical reframing of the use of disabled characters in film. Using hundreds of clips spanning over 100 years of moviemaking, and a cast of disabled artists, scholars and activists, the film is a scorching critique of some of Hollywood’s most beloved characters. This revelatory documentary investigates the power of movie imagery to shape the beliefs and behaviors of the general public toward disabled people, and of disabled people toward themselves. BROWARD ART GUILD: CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY AND CULTURE ART AND POETRY POP-UP EXHIBIT

IS PROJECTS: VIRTUAL RAISED CORD BINDING
February 21st at 4:00 pm
Learn how to sew your own raised cord binding! This ancient structure had it's heyday during the medieval times but remains a valuable and durable structure to know even in our digital age. We’ll go over how to prepare signatures and how to sew the structure using the cords as added support. This structure is typically glued up and covered so there are many opportunities to build on the foundational techniques that you will learn in this workshop as you move forward in your book arts endeavors. MIAMI BEACH URBAN STUDIOS: ZEN AND THE ART OF LGBT TRAVEL
February 22nd at 7:00 pm
This event features Barry Hoy and Teraj Allen and is hosted by George Neary. Join Teraj and Barry to hear about their experience traveling as a gay interracial couple with reflections on challenges faced by the community and recommendations on what the tourism industry can do to be more welcoming. Their goal is to push for progress in places without LGBTQ+ rights as well as protective legislation in places where discrimination is not overt yet deeply experienced. More event details here.
