Subtropics: Audible Fields

Deering Estate and Subtropics present Subtropics: Audible Fields at Deering Estate, a five-part series of immersive listening experiences curated by composer and intermedia artist Gustavo Matamoros. Taking place on select weekends at 4:00 PM, the series brings together experimental music, moving image, radio art, and spatial sound practices in a sequence of programs that foreground listening as an active, perceptual experience.

Across the series, sound, image, gesture, and environment converge within multichannel audio, expanded cinema, and durational performance. Audiences are invited to engage listening not only as hearing, but as a spatial mode of attention shaped by movement, resonance, and proximity. All events take place in the Deering Estate Theater, recently enhanced with updated projection, lighting, and surround sound capabilities. The theater serves as a cultural resource for the community, presenting a wide range of programs that include music, dance, film, and educational initiatives aligned with Deering Estate’s mission.
