Who Has the Right to Tell Your Story?

Late Conversations is a recurring series of open discussions held at the Germaine Marvel Building at the Art & History Museums of Maitland. Each evening brings together a small group around one question, with wine, water or coffee, without agendas, and without easy answers. Conversations are held primarily in English. Language assistance in 25+ languages available upon request.

Representation, authorship, memory, and appropriation collide in this Late Conversations evening. We ask who gets to narrate culture, trauma, migration, and identity, and whether lived experience grants authority, or whether empathy and craft can transcend personal history.

Does experience equal ownership? Can outsiders tell certain stories responsibly? What makes a narrative authentic?

No right answers. Just an honest conversation.
