Event Description

The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden continues its monthly Speaker Series at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 25, in the Toppino Nature Chapel.

Mark Hedden, Executive Director, Audubon Society of the Florida Keys, photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher reports on ‘The Accidental & The Weird: Some Rare Birds of the Florida Keys.’ The Florida Keys' unique location on the map makes it a pretty interesting place for birdwatching. Because of that we get a good number of rare birds here – from species you can’t find anyplace else in the country, to species that are way out of their normal range. Mark Hedden, who writes about wildlife for the Keys Weekly newspapers and is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society, will talk about some of these rarities such as Mangrove Cuckoos, Masked Boobies, Key West Quail-doves, Cuban Finches, Red-legged Thrushes, and several other species.
