Event Description

Step into the rich history of Historic Overtown through a stunning visual narrative that brings the neighborhood’s past to life. Sepia Vernacular invites you to explore a powerful collection of more than 80 archival photographs that capture the people, places, and spirit of one of Miami’s oldest and most influential communities.

Curated from the City of Miami Planning Department’s Archives, this exhibition offers a rare glimpse into Overtown’s vibrant culture during the first half of the 20th century, from everyday moments and bustling streets to defining landmarks and neighborhood traditions.

As part of this extended exhibition, you’ll also experience “Color Town", a striking 1940 photo series by acclaimed photographer Max Waldman, showcasing intimate portraits of daily life within Overtown’s close-knit community.

More than an exhibition, Sepia Vernacular is a poignant tribute to Overtown’s enduring legacy and its pivotal role in shaping Miami’s cultural identity. Discover the stories, faces, and memories that continue to inspire the neighborhood today.
