Dr. Erin Spencer is a marine ecologist and science writer dedicated to ocean conservation. She is currently the Communications Manager for Restoration at the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, where she leads communications for projects to restore deep coral habitats in the Gulf following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. She holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Florida International University, where she used biologging technology to study the movement and behavior of great hammerhead sharks.
Mesophotic and deep benthic habitats, or areas of the seafloor that see little to no sunlight, are home to a complex community of fish, corals, and other invertebrates. In the Gulf, these habitats faced an unprecedented threat in 2010 from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Today, NOAA and the Department of the Interior are leading efforts to restore mesophotic and deep sea habitats injured by the spill. Learn how this work uses a wide range of methods—including using saturation divers and civilian tech divers—to restore deep Gulf habitats.
Immerse Yourself presentations are held on the third Wednesday of the month and are offered free of charge. The History of Diving Museum offers extended hours on Immerse Yourself nights, with the last admission ticket into the exhibits available at 6:45 PM.
