Discover the serene artistry of Sumi-e in this immersive 6-week Monday class, open to all skill levels.
From the very first session, you’ll dive into the fundamentals—learning proper brush handling, preparing traditional ink, and practicing essential strokes, including the Four Gentlemen: bamboo, orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum blossom. Each week features guided demonstrations that lead into hands-on experimentation, giving you the opportunity to explore both foundational techniques and your own creative expression. As you work, you’ll begin to refine your artistic style and develop a deeper appreciation for the meditative nature of this timeless Japanese art form. By the end of the course, you’ll leave with a collection of original Sumi-e paintings and the confidence to continue your practice long after the session ends.
*Please note: A $30 materials fee is paid directly to the instructor to cover Sumi ink, a Japanese brush, and paper, which the student keeps.
