Event Description

"Cecilia Valdés," a zarzuela (Spanish Musical Theatre 1932) by Gonzalo Roig, tells the story of Cecilia, a young mulatta woman, and her complex relationships within the colonial Cuban society of the late 19th century. The narrative explores themes of social injustice, love, and the challenges faced by women, particularly those of mixed racial heritage, in a patriarchal society.
"Cecilia Valdés" is considered a landmark work in the Cuban zarzuela tradition.
"Cecilia Valdés" by Cirilo Villaverde is a classic Cuban novel set in Havana during the 1830s, exploring themes of love, loss, and social tensions in colonial Cuba. It revolves around Cecilia, a beautiful light-skinned mulatta, and her relationship with Leonardo, the son of a Spanish slave trader, who are unknowingly half-siblings. Their love story unfolds against the backdrop of slavery, racial prejudice, and the complexities of colonial society.
This concert will be in Spanish with stellar cast and The Florida Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Mtro. Marlene Urbay.
