On March 18, 2022, a provocative new exhibit will open at the Henry Plant Museum. Stop the Presses! Fake News and the War of 1898 explores yellow journalism and the work of famous war correspondents such as Richard Harding Davis and Stephen Crane. This exhibit is curated by Dr. Charles McGraw Groh of The University of Tampa and will run through December 23, 2022.“You furnish the pictures. I’ll furnish the war!” This famous phrase, attributed to William Randolph Hearst, owner of the New York Journal, remains firmly ensconced in our collective memory of the Spanish- American War. Did Heart really make this boast to the artist Frederic Remington? More importantly, did the flamboyant journalistic exploits and provocative images associated with “yellow journalism” contribute to the U.S. declaration of war against Spain in 1898? History of Diving Museum to open Dive Into Art: FantaSea, the fourth collaborative art show with the Museum and Art Guild of the Purple Isles (AGPI). The exhibit and art show will encompass fantasy elements tied to the ocean: mermaids, pirates, sea monsters and more, as well as literary themes such as fairy tales, fantastical poems and epics.The exhibit will feature art made by AGPI members as well as art created by students at eight different Monroe County schools, making this exhibit the largest collaboration to date. The student art ranges from sculptural hard cover books to giant story panels. Reframing views through the lens of her camera, O’Keeffe saw her environment as an array of possible shapes and forms. Moving from right to left, angling the camera from high to low, or turning it vertically and horizontally, she composed and recomposed her photographs to find harmonious compositions. The exhibition is curated by local artists Danyell Bauer and Mark Noll. The show of fine art features imaginative pieces inspired by Dia de los Muertos from around the state, 28 artists created more than 70 pieces in glass, fiber, metal and wood and paint on canvas. There are also 68 Sugar skulls decorated by local artists which all started from the same wooden base with each artist creating a unique piece of art based on that. 50 smaller sugar skulls were decorated by local children.
