Life in South Florida is defined by the water-inflected climate—rain, humidity, verdant vegetation, marshes, rivers, and expansive beaches. We depend on water for utility and transportation. We cook, clean, relax, and observe life’s transitions with water. We hold personal beliefs, stories, and rituals around water. Water’s ripples, waves, and reflections are essential and integral to our very being.

Curated by South Florida artist and educator Allison Bolah, this evolving presentation of archival records, documentary filmmaking, and oral history, features the art of Franklyn Sinanan and addresses African Diasporic notions of water via the Delray Beach Black community’s historical and contemporary relationship with local bodies of water.

Water Works: Distillations is on view through September 21, 2025, at the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, in partnership with Sandoway Discovery Center.
