This program engages young performing artists in diverse and underserved communities, who are interested in high-quality actor training and performance education. The program combines workshops and one-on-one training with industry professionals culminating with a final musical theater performance at the end of the summer conservatory. Students, many of whom are from surrounding high schools, will meet five times a week for seven weeks to engage in rigorous training in acting technique, beginning to advance dance technique, the business of show and vocal training. These classes will be taught by professionals in the industry who will volunteer their time to these Master Classes that create the perfect well-rounded intensive for young artists who hope to pursue a career in theatre, dance, film, production, opera, and commercial music. Students will engage with each art discipline one day a week for seven weeks. This lightens the burden of time volunteered by each Master Teaching Artist. For example, Monday will be dance technique, Tuesday a focus on acting, Wednesday vocal technique and Thursday will be our "Show Business" class where young artists learn the business of show (i.e., creating resumes, reels, how to build the brand as an artist, etc.). Friday will be a special topics class (i.e., stage combat, dialect, tap dance, etc.).
Course descriptions for each discipline are as follows;
Dance: This class progresses as an extension from the introductory to the advanced class. It begins with the demarcation of various dance styles: ballet, modern, jazz, Afro, lyric, musical comedy, hip-hop, turns, hops, jumps, and leaps are introduced at this level.
Voice: From beginning to advanced, this class covers all basics of singing, such as body awareness, correct breathing & technique, rhythm, stage presence and working with a band. It is meant to prepare the young learner for any future ventures in music.
Acting: This class will focus on introducing the craft of acting and the foundation for all performance. Class consists of group exercises to develop physical awareness, concentration, imagination and trust.
Additionally, this class will revolve around basic physical movements, vocal and analytical concepts, methods of acting, vocabulary, and discipline will also be explored. Students will develop personalized creative processes through monologues, scene work, and exercises in observational awareness.
The "Young, Gifted & Brave - Theatre for Youth" Summer Conservatory will run for a total of seven weeks. Students are guaranteed a complete reel for future auditions, resumes, headshots, and to be cast in their first professional production with Brévo Theatre. Days of the conservatory start June 12, 2023, with observation for the Holiday on July 4, 2023. Classes will run Monday- Friday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm for seven weeks ending July 29, 2023. Final performances for the "Young, Gifted & Brave" showcase will take place Wednesday - Sunday of the final week. The conservatory will be located in Bailey Hall at Broward College located at 3501 Davie Rd, Davie, FL 33314.
