A Peculiar Paradise: Florida Photographs by Nathan BennThu 11/8/2018 - Sun 4/14/2019
While on assignment for National Geographic, photographer Nathan Benn captured Florida in 1981, a moment in the state’s history made famous by Miami’s narcotics-related crime wave and influx of newcomers from the Caribbean. After nearly 40 years, Benn has revisited his Florida image archive and A Peculiar Paradise will feature nearly 100 selections, as well as artifacts related to his 20-year career at National Geographic. Featured pictures will cover, among other topics, Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, nightlife, the narcotics war, flora and fauna, immigration, work cultures, tourist attractions, elderly citizens, and Dundee’s 5th Street Gym. Come experience Benn’s images reflecting the dynamism and uniqueness of an unusual time in Florida’s history.
A former president of Magnum Photos, Nathan Benn was born and raised in Miami, and currently resides in Santa Fe, NM and New York City.
