New Art Installation at Broward County's FLL Airport

New Art is always exciting! A 240-footlong chromatic LED light display by Los Angeles-based artist Cameron McNall is the newest addition to the public art on permanent display at Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

Commissioned by Broward County’s Public Art & Design Program in partnership with the Broward County Aviation Department, McNall’s artwork, titled Mosaic, transforms FLL’s Terminal 4 walkway into an immersive experience of color and luminosity that welcomes passengers arriving on international flights and engages passengers in the concourse below though a vibrant spectacle of color.

The innovative, site-specific artwork is integrated into the terminal architecture and dynamically interprets a color spectrum as a time spectrum spanning a one-hour continuum. During each of Mosaic’s repeated 60-minute cycles, cells change in color and slowly morph from one chromatic range to another. The artwork’s appearance continually changes, with visitors gradually becoming aware of its subtle chromatic shifts.

Cameron McNall is an artist and architect whose work encompasses sculpture, architecture, installation art, scenario planning, film, sound and mixed-media. He is Principal of the team, Electroland, which creates objects, interactive experiences and large-scale public art projects and has been featured at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum Triennial. McNall received a Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design from UCLA. He is the recipient of numerous honors, including the Rome Prize in Architecture.

According to the artist, “Mosaic provides a unique personality and voice for Terminal 4 that is visually exciting and welcoming. Similar to large train station clocks of the past, by its size, position and vibrancy the artwork adds a unique unifying visual focus for the concourse, enriching the airport experience for all who pass by.”

Located in Terminal 4, which currently serves international passengers arriving on Spirit, JetBlue, and Azul flights, the light display was funded by Broward County’s public art and design ordinance that allocates 2% of capital construction project budgets to public art.

“Public Art is a critical part of our guests' airport experience,” said Mark Gale, CEO/Director of Aviation, “those fortunate enough to travel through Terminal 4 will experience a spectacular, colorful and vibrant walkway that I hope will be the highlight of their time at FLL.”

“For more than four decades, Broward County’s Public Art & Design Program has commissioned over 260 projects throughout the community that have inspired and engaged broad audiences,” said Phillip Dunlap, Director of the Broward Cultural Division. “We are pleased to present this ambitious new public artwork that will be enjoyed by travelers from all over.”
