Miami’s Grammy-nominated choral ensemble Seraphic Fire wrapped up its virtual season, known as Season S, with the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Claudio Monteverdi. This last presentation, on May 23, marked the first time these artists gathered after more than one year apart – and the intensity of emotions they exuded made their sacred music shine even brighter.Seraphic Fire cautiously approached every detail in preparing for the first in-person recording in still unstable conditions. Humbly rather than pompously, the ensemble gathered around a finely chosen repertoire. In the ascetic acoustic space, the sonority of evenly employed male and female voices carried an intimate atmosphere over the screen.Conductor Patrick Dupré Quigley, the ensemble’s founder and artistic director, chose five pieces from Monteverdi’s collection, “Selva Morale e Spirituale” (1641). Theater director Giancarlo Rodaz is known for producing children’s classics including “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Matilda the Musical.”His latest project, “The Ballad of Janis Matthews and the Dodo Scouts,” embraces all the wonder and sense of adventure common to these stories. Still, it bears a heaviness that elevates it beyond what would be considered kids’ fodder.“It is a family musical, but I think there are a lot of really intense themes that we try to tackle,” says Rodaz, who is associate artistic director at Miami’s Area Stage Company. “Kids love it when we’ve done it, and people get hooked on the music, but when it comes to the actual themes of family and division and unity and community, there’s really a lot for adults to chew on.“I really did not write it to be a kids’ show – it’s really not that, although there are kids in it.”“Janis Matthews,” which was also directed and designed by Rodaz, will be presented by …

In late winter, he got to spend a few days in Los Angeles working on the world premiere of Grammy- and Emmy award-winner Robert Glasper’s first orchestral work, commissioned by Miami’s Nu Deco Ensemble. As the ensemble’s cofounder and artistic director, Hyken is instrumental in developing the artistic vision of the orchestra, and its collaborations with artists.“It was an absolute bucket-list collaborator,” says Hyken. “He is such an incredible artist that is really breaking boundaries and just revered in the musical world. The opportunity to get him to write a piece for orchestra the first time with Nu Deco was really exciting.”Fast-forward to mid-March and COVID-19 changed everything.“We were gearing up for [the world premiere concert] … He had come in, we did one rehearsal within New World Center, and it was a total match made in heaven. Everyone was really excited about the work and the collaboration,” Hyken says. “Then the very next day, the world started …
