The Blue Note Jazz Club, a New York institution with branches around the world, is expanding its reach to South Florida with a Miami Beach concert series starting with Arturo Sandoval on June 5 and 6.The Cuban-American jazz trumpeter’s story is the makings of a movie, literally. A chance meeting with jazz superstar Dizzy Gillespie took Sandoval from his native Cuba to the world stage and ultimately to a new home in the United States. You may know the tale from the 2000 biopic, “For Love or Country,” which starred Andy Garcia as Sandoval.Having hunkered down for the past year-plus like the rest of us, Sandoval, 71, is eager to get back on stage: “I’m happy that I’m finally … next month we’re gonna start working, oh my goodness!” he said.The two nights at the North Beach Bandshell will mark his first performances since the pandemic, but he’s hardly been idle. While staying safe at home and practicing social distancing, kids between the ages of 8-17 are invited to submit preliminary round audition videos that showcase their talents. Prizes range from performing arts scholarships to cash awards, performance opportunities and more. The grand prize winner will receive four tickets to Universal Orlando and a hotel stay for two nights, courtesy of WSVN 7News, along with $500 in cash.The talent competition features a total of six individual categories including pop/rock/rap vocals, musical theatre/jazz standards/classical vocals, dance, musical instrument, original spoken word, and original vocal and/or instrumental composition. Categories for groups of six or fewer members include dance, musical instrument/bands and vocal groups. South Florida has a hometown hero to root for when the Grammys are awarded on Jan 26. The latest work by trumpeter, composer and educator Brian Lynch – “The Omni-American Book Club: My Journey Through Literature in Music” – has received a couple of nominations.The big band project is under consideration for “Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album,” and one of the nine songs written for it by Lynch, “Crucible for Crisis,” is a contender for “Best Instrumental Composition.”This isn’t the first Grammy experience for Lynch, who serves as studio instructor of jazz trumpet at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. He has now been nominated five times and won once: in 2007, when “Simpatico,” by the Brian Lynch/Eddie Palmieri Project, was named “Best Latin Jazz Album.”Lynch recognizes that what he plays may go by different names, such as jazz or salsa or rhumba or funk, but he understands it as Afro-diasporic.“To me, it’s all the same music,” he said. …

Experience a unique evening, May 5th at the Metropolitan Community Church. The program to be performed is titled Lights, Camera, Action, which is a presentation of theme songs from Broadway, Hollywood and classic television.A subset of the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, the Pride Jazz Ensemble includes 20 musicians who play the saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, piano, and electric guitar. Under the leadership of Ensemble Director Alain Ortiz, the group performs works from classic jazz and popular contemporary composers.The ensemble will take place at 4857 Northlake Blvd. in Palm Beach Gardens May 5th at 6pm. Tickets to this concert are $20 each and are available for purchase online or after Sunday services in the Metropolitan Community Church of the Palm Beach Gardens lobby.
