38th annual Miami Film Festival goes hybrid, with in-person and virtual screenings

In March 2020, the pandemic forced the Miami Film Festival to close with just four days left in its run. Now, a year later, the festival is going forward with a hybrid format: in-person screenings at one cinema (instead of its typical multiple venues) and virtual screenings to enjoy from home.“Most of the films that will be live will also be virtual,” says Lauren Cohen, the festival’s associate director of programming. “We got over 1,000 submissions this year, and we have over 100 films from 40 countries.”The festival opens on March 5 with an in-theater, world-premiere screening of Miami-based filmmaker Edson Jean’s “Ludi,” based on his Haitian mother’s job as a home health aide for Miami seniors and her experience trying to make her way in America. A personal story with a screenplay by Jean and co-writer Joshua Jean-Baptiste, “Ludi” will also be available to watch virtually.The film will compete for both the $40,000 Knight Made in MIA Feature Film Award supported …

The Festival will open and close with two World premieres by Miami artists - Edson Jean’s Ludi and Jayme Gershen’s Birthright. The Virtual Edition starts with a Drive-In Opening Night experience beginning Thursday, August 20th. The remaining film events will screen daily, throughout the 10 days with live Q&A’s and actor appearances to maintain the “festival” experience. Summer Theatre Fest will become Quarantine Theatre Fest, where the South Florida Theatre League will heavily promote member organizations’ online offerings throughout the month of July and host multiple professional development opportunities for both artists and arts administrators.“Our members shifted quickly to engaging their audiences online since the middle of March. Since one of the few programming choices available to theatres at this time are online readings; it made more sense for us to lift up what they are already doing to engage audiences they might not be reaching currently and supplement with opportunities for continuing professional development,” said executive director, Andie Arthur.In addition to pushing audiences to try the theatre’s online programing, the League will be hosting multiple workshops throughout July including Corona Creatives and Chill - an online mini-conference for the community to discuss issues around COVID-19.
