Foodie Diaries - Modern Garden

Nestled on the banks of the Miami River, Modern Garden captures the essence of waterfront dining, with stunning views of the downtown skyline. Immediately upon entering, we were blown away by the extraordinary permanent art installation composed of two large trees made and shaped from nominal lumber, forming a canopy that spread throughout the space. This design was complemented by teardrop light fixtures randomly hung from the branches, providing soft, atmospheric illumination to the table seating and bar areas. We had heard that this permanent art installation was designed by Santiago Pelaez and was unveiled to a select audience during Art Basel 2014, but seeing it up close with our own eyes was totally impressive!

With a large selection of contemporary interpretations of exquisite raw fish and seafood, as well signature hot stone selections, we couldn’t wait to taste the many delights that passionate and hardworking Chef Benjamin Goldman had in store for us!

From the Garden

Purple Watercress Salad
Talk about a great way to whet our appetites! This dish consists of green goddess, myoga, bubu arare, and smoked trout roe. The portions were large and fresh and really hit the proverbial spot.

Salmon Rosettes
If you’re looking for creamy, sublime texture, you’ve found it! Featuring fresh, off the coast of Norway Faroe Island salmon, this platter includes candied shallot, salmon roe, and sudachi. Mmm.

Hokkaido Scallop Tartare
You’ll swear you’ve been kissed by the ocean with this sweet, succulent scallop, accompanied by crispy bamboo rice, which provides the perfect complement, as well as serrano, yuzu paste, and tangerine mojo.

Hot Stone

Modern Garden’s Hot Stone selections are seared to perfection on 850-degree volcanic stone slabs, conveniently brought to your table. It was a wonderful and interactive experience, watching our meat sizzle on the hot stone, and tasting the delectable results!

A5 Wagyu
OMG! This striploin was so delish, and the alderwood & maldon salts, combined with the lavender flower created over-the-top goodness that we couldn’t get enough of!

Muscovy Duck Breast
You haven’t had duck like this before! Featuring purplette onion, umeboshi, maple tamari, and basil buds, this entrée really tickled our taste buds with an onslaught of flavor. So good!

Forbidden Rice
We were prepared to break all the rules to get more of this forbidden treasure trove of organic purple rice, coconut, and gooseberry. Perfect accompaniment for any of the dishes we tried.
